RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Hypertension is a recognized risk factor for Parkinson's disease (PD). The renin-angiotensin system (RAS) inhibitors are widely used to treat hypertension. However, the association of RAS inhibitor use with PD has still been an area of controversy. METHODS: Thus, we conducted a meta-analysis to investigate the relationship between RAS inhibitor use and PD. PUBMED and EMBASE databases were searched for articles published up to Oct 2023. All studies that examined the relationship between RAS inhibitor use and the incidence of PD were included. RESULTS: Seven studies with total 3,495,218 individuals met our inclusion criteria for this meta-analysis. Overall, RAS inhibitor use was associated with a reduction in PD risk (OR = 0.88, 95%CI = 0.79-0.98) compared with the controls. When restricted the analysis to individuals with RAS inhibitor use indication, RAS inhibitor exposure was also associated with a decreased risk of PD (OR = 0.76, 95%CI = 0.62-0.92). Pooled results of cohort studies also did support a protective role of angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs) (OR = 0.97, 95%CI = 0.89-1.07) users and angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs) (OR = 0.8, 95%CI = 0.63-1.02) in PD. CONCLUSION: Overall, RAS inhibitor use as a class is associated with a reduction in PD risk. However, the findings of ACEIs and ARBs may be limited by small sample size. Future well-designed studies considering the classification by inhibitor type, duration, dose, or property of BBB penetration of RAS inhibitors are needed to clarify the contribution of these exposure parameters on the risk of PD.

RESUMEN

Objective.Recent studies have shown that integrating inertial measurement unit (IMU) signals with surface electromyographic (sEMG) can greatly improve hand gesture recognition (HGR) performance in applications such as prosthetic control and rehabilitation training. However, current deep learning models for multimodal HGR encounter difficulties in invasive modal fusion, complex feature extraction from heterogeneous signals, and limited inter-subject model generalization. To address these challenges, this study aims to develop an end-to-end and inter-subject transferable model that utilizes non-invasively fused sEMG and acceleration (ACC) data.Approach.The proposed non-invasive modal fusion-transformer (NIMFT) model utilizes 1D-convolutional neural networks-based patch embedding for local information extraction and employs a multi-head cross-attention (MCA) mechanism to non-invasively integrate sEMG and ACC signals, stabilizing the variability induced by sEMG. The proposed architecture undergoes detailed ablation studies after hyperparameter tuning. Transfer learning is employed by fine-tuning a pre-trained model on new subject and a comparative analysis is performed between the fine-tuning and subject-specific model. Additionally, the performance of NIMFT is compared to state-of-the-art fusion models.Main results. The NIMFT model achieved recognition accuracies of 93.91%, 91.02%, and 95.56% on the three action sets in the Ninapro DB2 dataset. The proposed embedding method and MCA outperformed the traditional invasive modal fusion transformer by 2.01% (embedding) and 1.23% (fusion), respectively. In comparison to subject-specific models, the fine-tuning model exhibited the highest average accuracy improvement of 2.26%, achieving a final accuracy of 96.13%. Moreover, the NIMFT model demonstrated superiority in terms of accuracy, recall, precision, and F1-score compared to the latest modal fusion models with similar model scale.Significance.The NIMFT is a novel end-to-end HGR model, utilizes a non-invasive MCA mechanism to integrate long-range intermodal information effectively. Compared to recent modal fusion models, it demonstrates superior performance in inter-subject experiments and offers higher training efficiency and accuracy levels through transfer learning than subject-specific approaches.

RESUMEN

The 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) is crucial in assessing patient decisions. However, portable ECG devices capable of acquiring a complete 12-lead ECG are scarce. For the first time, a deep learning-based method is proposed to reconstruct the 12-lead ECG from Frank leads (VX, VY, and VZ) or EASI leads (VES, VAS, and VAI). The innovative ECG reconstruction network called M2Eformer is composed of a 2D-ECGblock and a ProbDecoder module. The 2D-ECGblock module adaptively segments EASI leads into multi-periods based on frequency energy, transforming the 1D time series into a 2D tensor representing within-cycle and between-cycle variations. The ProbDecoder module aims to extract Probsparse self-attention and achieve one-step output for the target leads. Experimental results from comparing recorded and reconstructed 12-lead ECG using Frank leads indicate that M2Eformer outperforms traditional ECG reconstruction methods on a public database. In this study, a self-constructed database (10 healthy individuals + 15 patients) was utilized for the clinical diagnostic validation of ECG reconstructed from EASI leads. Subsequently, both the ECG reconstructed using EASI and the recorded 12-lead ECG were subjected to a double-blind diagnostic experiment conducted by three cardiologists. The overall diagnostic consensus among three cardiology experts, reaching a rate of 96%, indicates the significant utility of EASI-reconstructed 12-lead ECG in facilitating the diagnosis of cardiac conditions.

RESUMEN

Nonlinear wavefront shaping in periodically poled ferroelectric crystals has received great attention because it offers a convenient way to generate a structured light beam at new frequencies. In contrast to structurally uniform beams like Laguerre-Gaussian or Hermite-Gaussian modes, here we demonstrate the possibility to generate a spatially varied optical bottle beam via a frequency doubling process in a domain-engineered Sr0.61Ba0.39Nb2O6 (SBN) crystal. The nonlinear holography method was employed to design the modulation pattern of the second-order nonlinear coefficient χ(2), and the femtosecond laser poling was used to imprint the χ(2) pattern into the SBN crystal via ferroelectric domain inversion. The second harmonic bottle beam with zero intensity in its center that is surrounded in all three dimensions by light was observed with the incidence of a fundamental Gaussian beam. These results are useful for nonlinear generation and control of structured light at new frequencies, which has important applications in nonlinear photonics and quantum optics.

RESUMEN

The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio is used to reflect body's inflammatory status with prognostic value in different cancers. We aimed to investigate the influence of preoperative NLR in the prognosis of CRLM patients receiving surgery using meta-analysis. Data in Cochrane Library, PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases created before October 2022 were recruited. Meta-analysis was carried out with RevMan 5.3 and Stata16 software, and the primary outcome indicators included overall survival (OS), and secondary outcome indicators included disease-free survival (DFS) and relapse-free survival (RFS). The pooled risk ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for each outcome indicator were determined using random-effects models or fixed-effects models. The pooled odds ratio (OR) and corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CI) for NLR and clinicopathological characteristics were determined with a fixed-effects model. 18 papers published between 2008 and 2022 (3184 patients in total) were included. The pooled analysis found that high preoperative NLR was correlated with poor OS (multivariate HR = 1.83, 95% CI = 1.61-2.08, p < 0.01), DFS (multivariate HR = 1.78, 95% CI = 1.16-2.71, p < 0.01) and RFS (multivariate HR = 1.46, 95% CI = 1.15-1.85, p < 0.01), but NLR was not related to clinicopathological features of CRLM patients correlation. In conclusion, NLR is an independent risk factor for poor prognosis in patients with CRLM. More large-scale clinical researches are required in the future to demonstrate the inclusion of preoperative NLR as a prognostic indicator for CRLM patients to guide postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy.

RESUMEN

Direct femtosecond laser writing of ferroelectric domain structures has been an indispensable technique for engineering the second-order optical nonlinearity of materials in three dimensions. It utilizes localized thermoelectric field motivated by nonlinear absorption at the position of laser focus to manipulate domains. However, the impact of laser wavelengths, which is pivotal in nonlinear absorption, on the inverted domains is still sketchy. Herein, the light-induced ferroelectric domain inversion is experimentally studied. It is shown that the domain inversions can be achieved over a broad spectral range, but the optical threshold for domain inversion varies dramatically with the laser wavelength, which can be explained by considering the physical mechanism of femtosecond laser poling and nonlinear absorption properties of the crystal. Meanwhile, the effects of other laser processing parameters are also experimentally investigated. Our findings are useful to guide the fabrication of high-performance optical and electronic devices based on ferroelectric domains.

RESUMEN

Introducing electronegative species into organic constituents was considered to be one effective strategy for adjusting crystal symmetry and designing new nonlinear optical (NLO) materials. By substitution of C4 in piperidine (C5H11N) with electronegative oxygen, organic morpholine (C4H9NO) was easily obtained. Therefore, to design NLO crystals, we focused on combinations of stereochemically active lone-pair (SCALP) cation (Pb2+)-based chloride and bromide with morpholine molecules. In this work, two lead halide hybrid perovskite (C4H10NO)PbX3 (X = Cl, Br, abbreviated as MPbCl3 and MPbBr3, respectively) single crystals with moderate nonlinear optical properties were synthesized by a slow evaporation method. The two title crystals belong to orthorhombic space group P212121 with one-dimensional (1D) chainlike perovskite structures. Theoretical calculations revealed that the second harmonic generation (SHG) responses mainly originate from distorted {PbX6} octahedrons of the inorganic framework. Remarkably, moderate phase-matching SHG effects of about 0.70 and 0.81 times KH2PO4, large birefringences of 0.098 and 0.111 at 1064 nm, and large laser damage thresholds (LDTs) of 19.94 and 46.82 MW/cm2 were estimated for MPbCl3 and MPbBr3, respectively. This work provides a novel strategy for new purpose-designed hybrid NLO crystals by adjustment and modulation of chemical modification.

RESUMEN

Transverse second-harmonic generation, in which the emission angles of the second harmonic are determined by the spatial modulation of the quadratic nonlinearity, has important applications in nonlinear optical imaging, holography, and beam shaping. Here we study the role of the local duty cycle of the nonlinearity on the light intensity distribution in transverse second-harmonic generation, taking the generation of perfect vortices in periodically poled ferroelectric crystal as an example. We show, theoretically and experimentally, that spatial variations of the nonlinearity modulation must be accompanied by the corresponding changes of the width of inverted ferroelectric domains, to ensure uniformity of the light intensity distribution in the generated second harmonic. This work provides a fundamental way to achieve high-quality transverse second-harmonic generation and, hence, opens more possibilities in applications based on harmonic generation and its control.

RESUMEN

Anaerobic ammonia oxidation (anammox) is an environmental-friendly biological nitrogen removal process, which has been developed as a promising technology in industrial wastewater treatment. However, anammox nitrogen removal under high saline conditions still faces many challenges. This study investigated the performance of anammox sludge under saline short-term shock and the strategy of rapid recovery. Salinity concentration, saline exposure time, and NaCl/Na2SO4 ratio were selected as three critical factors for short-term shock. The activity inhibition of anammox sludge were tested by using response surface methodology (RSM). Our results showed that, compared with the NaCl/Na2SO4 ratio, the salinity concentration and saline exposure time were the significant factor causing the anammox inhibition. The addition of glycine betaine (GB) in moderate amounts (0.1-5 mM) was found to help anammox to resist in relative low saline shock intensities (e.g., IC25 and IC50), with the activity retention rate of 94.7%. However, glycine betaine was not worked effectively under relatively high saline shock intensities (e.g., complete inhibition condition). Microbial community analysis revealed that Brocadiaceae accounted for only about 7.6%-13.2% at inhibited conditions. Interestingly, 16S rRNA analysis showed that the abundance of activated Brocadiaceae remarkably decreased with time after high-level saline shock. This tendency was consistent with the results of qPCR targeted hzsA gene. Finally, based on quorum sensing, the anammox activity was recovered to 93.5% of original sludge by adding 30% original sludge. The study realized the rapid recovery of anammox activity under complete inhibition, promoting the development and operation of salt-tolerant anammox process.

RESUMEN

This study aims to determine the function of topotecan (TPT) in acute lung injury (ALI) induced by sepsis. The mouse sepsis model was constructed through cecal ligation and puncture (CLP). The ALI score and lung wet/dry (W/D) weight ratio were applied to evaluate the level of lung injury. Hematoxylin-eosin staining was used to examine the role of TPT in lung tissue in a CLP-induced ALI mouse model. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction were used to detect the concentrations of inflammatory factors, such as interleukin-6 (IL-6), IL-1ß, and tumor necrosis factor-α. Western blot was used to detect relevant protein levels in the nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) pathway. Moreover, 10-day survival was recorded by constructing the CLP model. The results indicated that TPT could improve lung tissue damage in mice and could significantly reduce lung injury scores (p < 0.01) and the W/D ratio (p < 0.05). Treatment with ammonium pyrrolidinedithiocarbamate obtained the similar results with the TPT treatment. Both significantly reduced the inflammatory response in the lungs, including reducing the number of neutrophils and total cells in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF), significantly reducing the total protein concentration of the BALF, and significantly inhibiting the activity of MPO. Both also inhibited inflammatory cytokine expression and the levels of NF-κB pathway proteins induced by sepsis. Furthermore, TPT significantly improved survival in sepsis. TPT improves ALI in the CLP model by inhibiting the NF-κB pathway, preventing fatal inflammation.

RESUMEN

Objective: In order to better adapt to clinical applications, this paper proposes a cross-validation decision-making fusion method of Vision Transformer and DenseNet161. Methods: The dataset is the most critical acetic acid image for clinical diagnosis, and the SR areas are processed by a specific method. Then, the Vision Transformer and DenseNet161 models are trained by the fivefold cross-validation method, and the fivefold prediction results corresponding to the two models are fused by different weights. Finally, the five fused results are averaged to obtain the category with the highest probability. Results: The results show that the fusion method in this paper reaches an accuracy rate of 68% for the four classifications of cervical lesions. Conclusions: It is more suitable for clinical environments, effectively reducing the missed detection rate and ensuring the life and health of patients.

RESUMEN

Objective: To explore an inpainting method that can balance texture details and visual observability to eliminate the specular reflection (SR) regions in the colposcopic image, thus improving the accuracy of clinical diagnosis for cervical cancer. Methods: (1) To ensure smoothness, Gaussian Blur and filling methods are applied to the global image. (2) Striving to preserve the anatomical texture details of the colposcopic image as much as possible, the exemplar-based method is applied to local blocks. (3) The colposcopic images inpainted in the previous two steps are integrated, so that important information of non-SR regions is preserved based on eliminating SR regions. Results: In the subjective visual assessment of inpainting results, the average of 3.55 ranks first in the five comparison sets. As to the clinical test, comparing the diagnosis results of 6 physicians before and after eliminating SR regions, the average accuracy of two kinds of classifications increased by 1.44% and 2.03%, respectively. Conclusions: This method can effectively eliminate the SR regions in the colposcopy image and present a satisfactory visual effect. Significance. As a preprocessing method for computer-aided diagnosis systems, it can also improve physicians' accuracy in clinical diagnosis.

RESUMEN

Femtosecond laser-induced crystallization and ablation of Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) phase change film is investigated by reflectivity pump-probing technology. Below the ablation threshold, the face-centered cubic structure (FCC) state in the central area can be formed, and cylindrical rims are formed in the peripheral dewetting zone due to the solidification of transported matter. The time of surface temperature dropping to the crystallization point needs about 30 ps for 5.86 mJ/cm2 and 82 ps for 7.04 mJ/cm2, respectively. At higher laser fluence, crystallization GST island structures appear in the central ablation region due to the extremely short heating time (100 ps). Furthermore, crystallization rate is faster than the ablation rate of the GST film, which is caused by different reflectivity.

RESUMEN

A novel 2H-phase transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD)-tantalum selenide (TaSe2) with metallic bandgap structure is a potential photoelectric material. A band structure simulation of TaSe2 via ab initio method indicated its metallic property. An effective multilayered TaSe2 saturable absorber (SA) was fabricated using liquid-phase exfoliation and optically driven deposition. The prepared 2H-TaSe2 SA was successfully used for a dual-wavelength Q-switched fiber laser with the minimum pulse width of 2.95 µs and the maximum peak power of 64 W. The repetition rate of the maximum pulse energy of 89.9 kHz was at the level of 188.9 nJ. The metallic 2H-TaSe2 with satisfactory saturable absorbing capability is a promising candidate for pulsed laser applications.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Protein regulator of cytokinesis 1 (PRC1) has been reported to play important role in the pathogenesis of various cancers. However, its role in colon cancer has not been studied. Here, we aimed to investigate the biological functions and potential mechanism of PRC1 in colon cancer. METHODS: The expression level of PRC1 in colon cancer tissues and cell lines was detected by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR), Western blotting, and immunohistochemical (IHC) staining of a tissue microarray (TMA). Furthermore, colon cancer cell lines HCT116 and SW480 were treated with short hairpin RNAs against PRC1. The biological function of PRC1 was determined by MTT proliferation, colony formation assay, cell cycle, and apoptosis assays. Then, an in vivo tumor formation assay was conducted to explore the effects of PRC1 on tumor growth. RESULTS: The mRNA and protein expression levels of PRC1 were highly expressed in colon cancer tissues and cell lines. PRC1 expression was associated with clinicopathological characteristics and overall survival of patients with colon cancer. Knockdown of PRC1 could decrease proliferation and colony forming ability of colon cancer cells, as well as arrested more cells at G2/M phase and promoted cell apoptosis. In cancer cells, the expression pattern of protein regulators included in cell cycle and apoptosis progress were reverted by PRC1 down-regulation. Additionally, PRC1 down-regulation could suppress colon tumor growth and differentiation. CONCLUSIONS: We confirmed that PRC1 was overexpressed in colon cancer and was associated with poor prognosis of colon cancer patients. PRC1 down-regulation could arrest cell cycle at G2/M stage, inhibit proliferation, and elicit apoptosis. These findings showed the potential of PRC1 to be used for therapeutic approaches in colon cancer.

RESUMEN

Capturing the three-dimensional (3D) shape of the burden surface of a blast furnace (BF) in real-time with high accuracy is crucial for improving gas flow distribution, optimizing coke operation, and stabilizing BF operation. However, it is difficult to perform 3D shape measurement of the burden surface in real-time during the ironmaking process because of the high-temperature, high-dust, and lightless enclosed environment inside the BF. To solve this problem, a real-time 3D measurement system is developed in this study by combining an industrial endoscope with a virtual multi-head camera array 3D reconstruction method. First, images of the original burden surface are captured using a purpose-built industrial endoscope. Second, a novel micro-pixel luminance polarization method is proposed and applied to compensate for the heavy noise in the backlit images due to high dust levels and poor light in the enclosed environment. Third, to extract depth information, a multifeature-based depth key frame classifier is designed to filter out images with high levels of clarity and displacement. Finally, a 3D shape burden surface reconstruction method based on a virtual multi-head camera array is proposed for capturing the real-time 3D shape of the burden surface in an operational BF. The results of an industrial experiment illustrate that the proposed method can measure the 3D shape of the entire burden surface and provide reliable burden surface shape information for BF control.

RESUMEN

We present an experimental study on the Cerenkov second harmonic emission in a novel sunflower spiral array of ferroelectric domains in LiNbO3 crystal. The spiral patterns offer a diffusive, circularly symmetric distribution of reciprocal lattice vectors, thereby enabling enhanced emission of the Cerenkov beam in a broad spectral range. Instead of the traditional electric field poling, the sunflower spiral patterns are fabricated here by using our pioneering method of ferroelectric domain engineering with ultrafast light. This all-optical method gives access to high quality domain structures with short periods, which is beneficial for efficient Cerenkov harmonic generation.

RESUMEN

This study aimed to evaluate the biological role of geranylgeranyl diphosphate synthase (GGPPS) in the progression of lung adenocarcinoma. GGPPS expression was detected in lung adenocarcinoma tissues by qRT-PCR, tissue microarray (TMA) and western blotting. The relationships between GGPPS expression and the clinicopathological characteristics and prognosis of lung adenocarcinoma patients were assessed. GGPPS was down-regulated in SPCA-1, PC9 and A549 cells using siRNA and up-regulated in A549 cells using an adenoviral vector. The biological roles of GGPPS in cell proliferation, apoptosis, migration and invasion were determined by MTT and colony formation assays, flow cytometry, and transwell and wound-healing assays, respectively. In addition, the regulatory roles of GGPPS on the expression of several epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) markers were determined. Furthermore, the Rac1/Cdc42 prenylation was detected after knockdown of GGPPS in SPCA-1 and PC9 cells. GGPPS expression was significantly increased in lung adenocarcinoma tissues compared to that in adjacent normal tissues. Overexpression of GGPPS was correlated with large tumours, high TNM stage, lymph node metastasis and poor prognosis in patients. Knockdown of GGPPS inhibited the migration and invasion of lung adenocarcinoma cells, but did not affect cell proliferation and apoptosis. Meanwhile, GGPPS inhibition significantly increased the expression of E-cadherin and reduced the expression of N-cadherin and vimentin in lung adenocarcinoma cells. In addition, the Rac1/Cdc42 geranylgeranylation was reduced by GGPPS knockdown. Overexpression of GGPPS correlates with poor prognosis of lung adenocarcinoma and contributes to metastasis through regulating EMT.

RESUMEN

Ieodomycin B, which shows in vitro antimicrobial activity, was isolated from a marine Bacillus species. A novel asymmetric total synthetic approach to ieodomycin B using commercially available geraniol was achieved. The approach involves the generation of 1,3-trans-dihydroxyl at C-3 and C-5 positions via a Crimmins-modified Evans aldol reaction and a chelation-controlled Mukaiyama aldol reaction of a p-methoxybenzyl-protected aldehyde, as well as the generation of a lactone ring in a deprotection-lactonization one-pot reaction.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: HLA-DM gene, which is related to antigen processing and presentation and located in the non-classical class-II region of human leukocyte antigen (HLA) region, may play a crucial role in chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection treatment outcomes. The study was conducted to evaluate the role of the variant of several single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in HLA-DM gene in HCV treatment outcomes. METHODS: We genotyped four SNPs from the candidate genes (HLA-DMA and DMB) in 336 patients who were treated with pegylated interferon-alpha and ribavirin (PEG IFN-α/RBV). Multivariate analysis of factors predicting sustained virological response (SVR) was conducted. RESULTS: HLA-DMA rs1063478 and DMB rs23544 were independent factors of HCV treatment outcomes in Chinese Han population. Individuals who carried favorable genotypes of rs1063478TT and rs23544GG were more likely to achieve SVR {Dominant model: odds ratio (OR) = 2.05, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.24-3.41; OR = 2.04, 95% CI =1.23-3.35, respectively}. Rs23544, rs1063478, baseline glucose, baseline platelet and T4 level were independent predictors of SVR. The area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC) was 0.740. CONCLUSIONS: The genetic variation of rs1063478 and rs23544 are associated with the treatment outcomes in the Chinese Han population.
